Are bikers putting their own lives at risk as well as those of other drivers by driving in the emergency lanes? The Arrive Alive website received this email from a biking enthusiast [David] who made the effort to count bikers in the emergency lane. We though it would be worthwhile sharing these numbers and the message received:

“I spent some time this morning with Vanessa Jackson of ER24 over the N1 highway, Cambridge road bridge, counting bikes and nothing positions on the highway between 6 and 9 this morning. The number will probably be used in a letter to SANRAL requesting no bikes signs be painted in the emergency lanes.

Counted              Biker Lane           Emergency         Lanes

N1S        112…………42……………………..6……………………106

N1N       211…………28……………………150……………………61

Total      323…………70……………………156………………….167

Not really worth publishing, but i think you find the numbers interesting.

You may need some clarification on some aspects, but it’s fairly straightforward. 156 of 323 bikers are IN the emergency lanes.”

  1. This is a request from Think Bike to all bikers on our roads. Please do NOT ride in the Emergency Lanes. It is illegal and dangerous. Your feeling of safety in that lane is false. Apart from the fact that you have no place to fall due to the concrete barrier, that lane contains all the debris thrown up by car wheels. Nails, oil, etc. Avoid it!

Over the years an un-official biker’s lane was created by bikers and motorists alike. It works. Please use it instead. It is legal and it is where the cars are expecting you. It just makes so much more sense from a safety point of view.

    Hi

I see they are talking about the “biker lane” and “emergency lanes”. Where is the biker lanes located on the N1?

The “biker lane” is between the fast lane and the lane to the left of that (lane spplitting)
