Much attention has recently been given to the dangers of cellular phones and driver distraction. On the Arrive Alive website we have also given attention to this ever increasing threat to road safety by developing a section titled “Texting and Driver Distraction” On the Car insurance Blog we discussed this from a insurance viewpoint with a blog titled “Will car insurance cover texting and distracted driving?”
The theory and black-on-white information is helpful, but for some of us a picture is better than a thousand words. The Arrive Alive website received visuals of an accident in Europe caused by driver distraction.
The Honda crotch rocket rider was travelling at approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident.
The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.
All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department.

We need to share this with all car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners AND ESPECIALLY EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO HAS A CELL PHONE!!!!!
The message with this email is very clear:
“Wake up people, Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while trying to drive. Put your Cell phone in the back seat !!!”

I simply do not believe that this Honda has been traveling @ 85mph. I’, pretty sure the speed was much greater, and I have found internet sites that are saying the accident was actually caused by the biker, which had a speed (as estimated by the Police, in the moment of impact) of 155mph. Way to much… So, even if the car driver was not talking on the phone, he/she would have had an issue being actually able to see the biker before entering the intersection. So, the meesage should be: DON’T DRIVE TOO FAST!
