A thirty year old man has been arrested following a high speed chase and shootout on the N2 highway this afternoon.
Shortly after 14:00 a stolen motor vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux, fitted with a satellite tracking device, was tracked to be traveling on the N2 near Umlazi, south of Durban.
Members of the SAPS’ elite Flying Squad were tracking the vehicle which was headed north and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team were activated to assist. The signal was tracked north headed towards Ballito, with visuals of the vehicle being obtained at the Tongaat Toll Gate.
In an attempt to evade arrest the driver fled the toll gate in a northerly direction at high speed, with members of the SAPS’ Flying Squad and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team in pursuit. A shootout ensued between the suspect and the SAPS, resulting in the driver of the stolen motor vehicle losing control, careening off the roadway and down an embankment.
The suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was treated on scene by Netcare911 emergency care practitioners, before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.
The man was arrested and the vehicle was taken into the custody of the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
