Comparing car insurance quotes – why are you not doing it?!!

We have on the Car Insurance Blog at carinsurance.arrivealive.co.za discussed the importance of comparing car insurance quotes. We have even provided some advice and suggestions on how to approach this important method of finding the correct product to meet your needs. But why are so many not comparing car insurance quotes? We have decided to share a few thoughts on car insurance comparison – and why this is neglected too often!

Comparing car insurance quotes – why are you not doing it?!!

• I don’t think it is necessary – I am insured

The car insurance industry has experienced significant changes over the past 10 years. The internet has made possible new business models and has increased competition in the industry. Direct insurers and insurance aggregators/ comparison websites have provided competition to the traditional business models, benefitting vehicle owners both on product range and price.

Your car insurance premium should recognize these changes. By not comparing car insurance quotes – and communicating with your existing insurer – you might be missing out on significant savings.

• My broker knows best – I trust my broker with my car insurance

This might well be true – but even if you have a very effective and professional broker, you need to ask whether he is comparing car insurance quotes on your behalf. Your broker might have a long standing relationship with a specific insurer – and only market the products of that car insurance provider.
Ask your broker with which car insurance provider he has contracts with – and ask him to provide you with some comparative quotes.

Should you only rely on the advice of your broker – you will be missing out on offerings from the direct insurers who are cutting out the broker or “man in the middle” in an effort to reduce the costs of car insurance. Reducing or cutting out broker commissions could provide huge savings.

• I am afraid to do the car insurance comparison myself

Many might fear not being able to compare car insurance quotes. We do not all have the same level of financial expertise and might fear being lead on the wrong path. It might be worthwhile to test the car insurance aggregators or comparison websites. These are designed to allow for easy and swift comparison of car insurance quotes for basic needs.

You should be able to do so with ease. It is important to recognize that you can still use a financial adviser to assist in comparing these quotes. Rather pay him a fee for his professional services in assisting with car insurance quotes – and then save on the monthly broker fees and reduced premiums gained!

• I am not computer literate / Not comfortable with the internet

Many older vehicle owners might not be as comfortable doing business online as our younger generation. Car Insurers and especially direct insurers have however made the process of acquiring and comparing car insurance very simple.

You need not fear the internet – and even if you are cautious of technology – you can ask a broker or financial advisor to assist in using the internet. The internet could be used not only to compare prices – but also to do find and read more information about car insurers and their products.

• I am loyal to my broker

Many people have a blind loyalty towards their broker. They would stay with that broker or might even have “inherited” them from their parents. They will tend to stay with that broker come hell or high water – and might believe that raising the request for comparative quotes might be regarded as a lack of loyalty.
Times have changed however – and there is much less loyalty towards brands. If your broker is not comparing car insurance quotes or not keeping you updated on new products and possible savings – your loyalty might be misplaced.

There is nothing wrong with loyalty – but the professional broker or advisor will respect your desire to receive more information and to compare insurance quotes in the search for the correct product to meet your needs!

• I do not know how to compare car insurance quotes

There is no shame in admitting that you are not comfortable with the “How to?” of comparing car insurance quotes. This recognizes that you are someone not jumping into the process of making financial decisions. On the Car Insurance blog we will guide you towards making the correct comparisons. With the correct approach you will be able to find either confirmation that you are adequately insured – or will make big strides towards financial security and saving on expensive car insurance premiums.

• I have recently compared my car insurance

This is the best answer to the above question. We would advise that this comparison be made every year – either by yourself –or your broker. There is increased competition in the car insurance market, and “new generation” products are developed every year. Keep in mind that there are many other variables on the side of the vehicle owner as well, such as changes in occupation, marital status or even changes pertaining to your vehicle.

Compare your car insurance yearly to ensure that you have the best car insurance for your specific vehicle!!

Finding the very best car insurance quotes with caution

Have you tried to find the best possible car insurance quotes? This might not be as easy as it is made out to be!! Let us look at two quotes from the internet:

Finding the very best car insurance quotes with caution

“Insurance: An ingenious modern game of chance in which the player is permitted to enjoy the comfortable conviction that he is beating the man who keeps the table.”
&
“Insurance is like marriage. You pay, pay, pay, and you never get anything back.”

The above quotations illustrates clearly the problem when searching the internet for quality advice – you might find a multitude of sources leading to a maze of information – and much of this information might have nothing to do with what you are searching for!

You might be searching for financial information and “financial quotes” to acquire insurance cover – but find “quotations/ sayings” from well known and lesser known individuals! This is perhaps a bit tongue in cheek – but provides us with insights and a word of caution on how to approach finding the correct insurance cover on the internet!!

Insurance information on the internet

We have previously claimed that the internet is making it easier to find car insurance cover. The internet is also making it easier to do research about companies and products and to find information necessary for consumer protection.

We can browse across thousands of websites, pages of articles and blogs to find what has been written about a specific insurer – and gain important insights about this insurer and levels of service delivery experienced by clients. The difficult part is not finding information about car insurance but rather to find quality information from credible sources!!

Blogs about car insurance and the credibility question

The internet is also the playground for marketers. It is a race to finding good search engine rankings and car insurance providers spend millions in funding on aspects such as search engine optimization – the term used to try and find top spots on search engines and being “highly searchable”.

If your website or blog is easily found via search engines – this also enhances your change of acquiring online quotes, selling car insurance and making the business profitable.

With this in mind many insurers appoint content writers and external companies to regularly provide written contributions on their own and independent blogs and to “punt” the business of a specific insurer.

Dangers of content from car insurance blogs

So what are the risks presented by editorial contributions in articles and blog posts. The uninformed consumer who does not approach the process of finding car insurance with caution could be easily misled. He might easily come across a blog post punting a specific car insurer – and be motivated into purchasing car insurance from that company – on the information offered by a “word mercenary”.

Advice to car insurance consumers

We will strive to advice our vehicle owners on how to find the correct vehicle insurers. During the past week it has been revealed that car insurance might become compulsory in South Africa – even though this might still take some time.

It will be important for the insurance industry to provide consumer education to the millions of uninsured vehicle owners in South Africa. We can expect car insurers to intensify their marketing campaigns and will find many more “word mercenaries” entering the online scene.

On this Blog we will focus not only on the importance of car insurance for road safety, but also alert vehicle owners to the pitfalls and dangers in the car insurance industry. Car insurance should be simple -but it is not a mere 1,2,3 and there you are insured!

Car insurance is similar to driving – not too difficult – but a disaster in the hands of the non- cautious operator! We will allow the consumer to gain more information about the process of finding car insurance, on how to meet his obligations during the term of the insurance contract, to avoid vehicle accidents and claims and even on what to do when his claim is unfairly dismissed!!

How important is continuous car insurance coverage

Written on June 22nd, 2010 by admin

How-important-is-continuous-car-insurance-coverage
There are many ways to find car insurance – and the internet has made it possible to find car insurance swiftly and without much effort. Vehicle owners are using comparison websites/ insurance aggregators to compare quotes and benefits and can change from insurance providers with the proverbial click of the button!!

Consumers in the car insurance industry today appear to be less brand loyal than those of years gone by. We live in an environment of fast foods and “easy fixes” – and car insurers are often battling to hold on to clients and to stop them from migrating between car insurers.

Is there value in sticking to a specific car insurance company?

This question leads us to considering the essence of the term “continuous coverage”. It is logical that the movement of clients between different car insurers and their claims history should be part of the risk profile of vehicle owners. So too should be the ability of a vehicle owner to have his car insured all of the time!

What is continuous car insurance coverage?

Continuous coverage refers to the length of time you have maintained insurance on your vehicle. Car insurance companies will scrutinize the insurance “track record” or insurance history of clients. Many clients have a gap in their insurance coverage, i.e. a length of time that they have not had car insurance cover – an interruption in their car insurance cover.

There could be many reasons apart from financial difficulties for such a break in cover. It is not only necessary to consider a gap in car insurance cover , but also to carefully consider the risks posed by those who have been at different insurers for a short period of time – or have driven with their cars uninsured for a while….

Interesting facts on continuous car insurance cover:

  • Most companies have higher premiums for people who have not carried continuous coverage for at least six months.
  • Changing insurance carriers or insuring different cars does not constitute a gap in coverage, unless you let your car insurance lapse or don’t replace it by your renewal date.
  • Being listed on your parents’ car insurance policy also counts toward continuous coverage.

Should we reward car insurance policyholders for continuous cover?

Many insurers are indeed rewarding car insurance policyholders for having continuous cover – and in even refers to this as a “persistency discount”. Too many insurers are plagued with claims from consumers who perceive their car insurance policy more as a savings account than as a car insurance policy contract.

Loyalty initiatives such as no-claims bonuses can reward consumers who are not regular claimants, and discounts for having continuous cover should be seen as another reward.

With car insurance premiums sharply on the increase – there should be more rewards for diligent consumers who are protecting their vehicles on and off the road and who are avoiding accident claims. There should also be rewards for those who have continuous car cover – and insurers should also reward those clients who do not jump from one insurer to the other!!

Are insurers making it difficult to compare car insurance quotes?

Written on April 29th, 2010 by admin
Categories: Car Insurance Advice

difficulty-in-comparing-car-insurance-quotesComparing ca insurance quotes are essential for the consumer trying to find the best car insurance policy! Of this there is no doubt – but is it possible for the average consumer to “fully” compare these quotes?

At first glance we might easily say that –Yes – that is why we have insurance aggregators and comparison websites! I believe that with all the different car insurance offerings it is near to impossible to effectively compare any quotes other than the most simple or “stripped down” car insurance quotes.

Example of car insurance quotes

I would like to argue this with reference to an actual example sent to me by a car insurance client in Cape Town. She is a 37 Year old single lady and provided the following details:

  • The vehicle to be insured is a Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline, 2004 model
  • The vehicle was comprehensively insured at market value R72,700
  • She paid the monthly premium of R534 through a broker at a car insurance company
  • Additional benefits include roadside assistance + general liability of R500k + insurance of the radio @ R1,500 + excess buster
  • After negotiations this was lowered to R455 with a Zero excess
  • She approached a direct insurer and was quoted a monthly premium of R284
  • Additional details include a joining fee of R205, the premium is fixed for 3 years and the general liability is for R5m
  • The excess will now be a flat rate of R2500 and there is also a small dent policy

What does this say about comparing car insurance quotes?

I believe that comparing requires far more than merely comparing premiums. Even though car insurers are innovative in their insurance offerings and product design – they are also making it nearly impossible for clients to compare the offerings from one provider with that of another!

Extras / Sweeteners / Add-on’s / Additional Benefits – what to make of this?

It is these innovative additional benefits that make a comparison so difficult! The car insurance industry is highly competitive and the car insurers are constantly trying to find that one ingredient that could give them the edge! They design new products and even patent these add-on’s to stop others from doing the same.
Additional benefits include:

  • No claims bonuses
  • Premiums fixed for 2 or 3 years
  • Roadside assistance
  • Flat or no excess
  • Etc

These benefits do not have an easily identifiable monetary value – thereby making it very difficult to estimate the true value of the benefit when comparing one quote with another!

Are car insurers intentionally making it difficult to compare their insurance quotes?

Product innovations and sweeteners are not unique to car insurance policies. In the pension fund industry we find the same variety in life cover with additional benefits such as varying free medical limits, funeral benefits, health and gym benefits and even educational benefits for remaining children.

We cannot expect from car insurers to merely provide the exact same benefits than all the other car insurers. This will not be in the interest of the consumer and could be regarded as anti –competitive. In the same way that fast food restaurant spice-up their beef burger with a special sauce or free drink, car insurers providers can be expected to out-wit competitors with unique product offerings!

Advice to the car insurance consumer

What can the consumer do to avoid all the clutter?

  • The consumer needs to be aware that there are many different products and that they differ in more than just price.
  • The consumer should approach any comparison with caution and take some time to compare offerings.
  • Do your homework to gain an understanding of the true value of additional benefits.
  • Only through some research and investigation will you be able to make an “informed” decision.
  • Use the internet and ask around to gain the necessary confirmations – chat to happy and disgruntled customers to find the correct questions you will need to ask!

Expect a significant increase in car insurance purchases online!

Written on March 31st, 2010 by admin
Categories: Car Insurance Advice

buy-car-insurance-onlineAt the start of 2010 we raised the question “Would 2010 be the year for car insurance in South Africa?” We focused on the low percentage of insured cars in South Africa, the crime statistics and the need to have more car insured on our roads.

We expect that there is huge opportunity for growth in the Car Insurance market – and recent data revealed on financial websites such as ITWeb and Moneyweb supports this argument.

What is needed for an increase in Car insurance sales online?

I believe that an increase in car insurance purchases requires:

  • Greater internet access
  • Enhanced consumer participation
  • Increased product offering
  • Online and other marketing of these products

I believe it is necessary to discuss this – and especially the 2 top requirements in more detail.

Greater Internet Access

To do business online – you need to be online!
World Wide Worx recently said the number of South Africans with access to the Internet had grown 15%, to 5.3 million users, in 2009, and it expects a similar growth rate for 2010. Almost 11 million South Africans are expected to be online by 2015.

Wireless broadband has leapfrogged ADSL, growing almost three times as fast as fixed-line broadband, said World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck at a media briefing in Sandton.

“The good news is that we will continue to see strong growth in 2010, and we should reach the six million mark by the end of the year,” said Goldstuck.

Enhanced Consumer Participation

Being online does not mean that you purchase online. With Consumer Participation we would like to refer to whether those who are online are comfortable with making online purchases. These consumers might have been hesitant at first with the technology or might have had security concerns, but are now comfortable in making purchases via the internet…

This online shopping is expected to gather momentum as more South Africans log onto the Internet. A survey released by global credit card company MasterCard shows 77% of South Africans, who have Internet access, shop online.

Anthony West, MasterCard senior VP and GM of Africa, was quoted on ITWeb as saying that the trend towards online shopping is growing. Although this year’s figure is slightly down on last year, the company recorded growth in 2009, compared with 2008.

West said there have been concerns over security, a perception that users need a credit card to shop online, and consumers wanting to “touch and feel” what they buy. However, he says, there is a growing trend towards buying big ticket items, such as furniture, online.

MasterCard expects online shoppers to grow in line with the expected growth of Internet users.

Why do more consumers shop online?

MasterCard believes that consumers are attracted by the minimum hassle of shopping online when compared to the queues at normal shops, as well as the lower prices that can be found on the Web.
Interesting data from this survey includes:

  • 83% of South African online shoppers are satisfied with their overall online shopping experience.
  • 72% of active online shoppers intend to make an online purchase in the next six months.
  • As online shoppers become more savvy and are increasingly satisfied with their online shopping experience, they are purchasing not just lifestyle items, such as airline tickets, online games and music downloads, but also basic necessities, including home appliances and groceries.

Conclusion

These are only a few of the indicators that could lead to an increase in Car Insurance purchases. “A sustained growth in internet penetration is a key factor that will positively influence the economy of South Africa”, Reshaad Sha, senior manager for Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group was quoted as saying in a statement.

We believe that the greater internet access available to South Africans and the better and more comfortable consumer experience by users will have a positive impact on the car insurance industry!!
