Festive Season wishes from the Car Insurance Blog

Written on December 24th, 2009 by admin
Categories: Car Insurance Advice, General Information

We would like to take a moment and divert from the posts focused only on car insurance, and share a few festive season wishes. Irrespective of the religion of our many vehicle owners, this is a time of the year that families get together and pause from their busy lives. This is a time when we are appreciative of all our blessings, a time for sharing with families and friends.

Christmas

We would like to reflect on a year that has been and also remember those who have passed away – especially those who have passed away on our roads. In 2008 more than 14,057 lives were lost on the roads of South Africa. We expect that as many would have died in road crashes this year. It is these lives that we would like to remember.

The Car Insurance Blog is not only aimed at sharing advice on how to find cheaper car insurance and how to ensure that justice is served in the processing of accident claims. The Car Insurance Blog is also aimed at assisting vehicle owners to have peace of mind on the road and to create awareness of road safety threats – not only to protect them from vehicle damage and loss – but also to protect the lives of drivers, passengers and other road users!

We will continue to promote the sharing of knowledge and a greater commitment to road safety, better care and support for victims, a reduction in the number of future victims, and improvement in road safety globally, regionally, nationally and locally.

May all our readers enjoy a Blessed Christmas / Festive Season and may we strive to love more and care more for those around us!!

Would 2010 be the year for car insurance in South Africa?

Written on December 17th, 2009 by admin
Categories: Car Insurance Advice

Car Insurance in South AfricaSince July we have written quite a bit on car insurance on this Blog. This has been an eye opener for me and a bit of a learning curve as well. In my 9 years in the financial services field I have worked as a registered compliance officer and a financial advisor on pension funds. I was not much involved in the short term insurance industry and I must admit that quite a bit of research and consultation were required for some of the blog posts in this car insurance blog.

As I reflect over the written contributions for the past 6 months, I would like to share my personal belief that the car insurance industry offers much value to insurers who are willing to work hard at product development, administration, communication and marketing! I would like to take a moment, consider some of the findings and realities in the car insurance industry, do some “scenario planning” and share my thoughts.

Size of the vehicle market in South Africa

The vehicle population statistics from eNaTIS reveals that on the 30th of October 2009 there were 9,576 285 registered vehicles in South Africa. This would then also be the number of “insurable vehicles” and an indication to the size of the potential vehicle insurance market. The South African Insurance Association however confirms that only approximately 30% of these vehicles on our roads are insured!

From these statistics it is clear that there is huge potential for car insurance business in South Africa. Insurers need not only fight for new vehicles to be insured or to convince vehicle owners to move from their existing insurers – there are about 70% of the vehicle population that have never been insured!

The need for car insurance

But why are there so few insured vehicles in South Africa? When compared to the US and European countries the most obvious explanation is that it is not required by law that vehicle ownership should be insured. Many vehicle owners try to save the extra expenses by taking the risk to drive uninsured vehicles. And is this a risk?

Most definitely! In 2008 alone there were more than 14,057 fatalities from road crashes on South African roads! These fatalities are only a fraction of the serious accidents and accidents without injury! All the listed injurers on the JSE have in the past 12 months expressed concern pertaining to the affect of vehicle accidents on their bottom-line and the need to increase car insurance premiums.

Another alarming fact to consider is the crimes statistics and the damage and vehicle loss caused by hijackers, thieves and crime syndicates. It is well known and reported that many crime syndicates focus on vehicle theft to supply these vehicles across the borders to neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

These statistics and the strong financial results from vehicle recovery companies should provide more than enough motivation for car insurers to actively pursue vehicle owners and offer them the correct car insurance products.

Political Landscape in South Africa and changing vehicle ownership

Insurers have recognized a significant change in vehicle ownership since 1994. Empowerment transactions and BEE strategies have made it possible for a large part of the previously disadvantaged communities to acquire vehicle ownership. Whereas the age of the driver was previously one of the most important requirements in risk assessment, it has now moved a bit towards “years of driving experience”. Many new vehicle owners in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s have entered the market and are potential car insurance policyholders.

It is also important to note that many of the older new entrants to have become vehicle owners are salary earners in the higher end of the income scale and more likely to be able to afford insurance premiums than those vehicle owners in their early 20’s.

Technology, Direct Insurers and Aggregators

Advances in technology and increased connectivity are changing the South African insurance industry. During the past few years much of the market share has been grabbed by the direct or online insurers. New insurers have entered the market and we have seen the creation of several insurance aggregators.

Not only is it expected that broadband connectivity will increase significantly in the next 3 years, but so too the comfort and desire amongst the South African consumer to go online for car insurance needs!

Car insurers will strive to be innovative to meet the desires of a new online consumer. Those insurers without a strong online presence or shareholding in online insurers will struggle to survive in the shift towards easily accessible and affordable car insurance!

Conclusion

We have experienced a turbulent 12 months in the banking and financial sector. The South African car insurance industry might be heading towards turbulent times as well – not driven by fear and concern – but rather by innovation and opportunity!

May we be able to assist as many vehicle owners as possible to make informed decision and find affordable insurance for their vehicles! The more insured vehicles on our roads, the better for road safety in South Africa!

Find below South Africa’s vehicle population as reflected on the eNaTIS. For ease of reference the statistics are presented according to vehicle class and per province. Increases and decreases in the live vehicle population from 31 October 2009 to 30 November 2009 are also presented.

Do I really need travel insurance?

Written on December 9th, 2009 by admin
Categories: General Information

travel_insuranceOur vehicle owners are most likely to drive with an insured rental vehicle when travelling abroad. But are they protected against other unfortunate mishaps such as medical emergencies from vehicle crashes, lost luggage, travel delays or injuries from adrenaline sporting activities?

On the Arrive Alive website we have decided to include a section on travel insurance to assist our vehicle owners with advice and suggestions when going abroad! We would like to quote a section from the website:

“We need to recognize that travelling for business or pleasure always does involve some form of risk. None of us are able to fund just any emergency out of our own pockets. Most medical aids will not cover medical expenses abroad, which is why travel insurance cover is vital to avoid financial disaster.

Travel insurance addresses the gaps in health insurance coverage for travellers outside their home county and protects them from substantial losses that may result from any unforeseen circumstances such as lost baggage, medical emergencies, supplier defaults, cancelled trips etc.

Travel insurance will allow you to travel with a greater sense of security. It is every traveller’s nightmare to fall ill or become injured whilst in a foreign country. In a developing country, substandard medical care is a worry. In a First World country, the poor Rand-exchange rate may mean that a simple operation could cost you the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of Rands.

History has shown that emergencies may both be sudden and devastating! From relatively minor inconveniences such as stolen luggage and missed flights to life changing events such as a tsunami, serious accident or severe illness, travellers face many situations in foreign countries that could have potentially devastating consequences. Travellers risk being alone in a foreign country with unfamiliar customs, unable to speak the language and being exposed to sometimes appalling medical facilities.

Travellers should, before embarking on the foreign travels, enquire about the medical services their health insurance will cover overseas. If the health insurance policy provides coverage outside your country of origin, travellers should be advised to carry both the insurance policy identity card (as proof of insurance) and a claim form.”

The process in acquiring travel insurance is similar to that of finding cheaper car insurance! There are affordable rates to be found by doing a bit of homework and it is worth going online to do some research and comparisons!

We would like to wish all our visitors a safe and enjoyable vacation this festive season. If you plan to go to a foreign destination, we urge you to view:

Car Insurance checklist before you go on holiday

Written on December 8th, 2009 by admin
Categories: Car Insurance Advice

vacation_checklist

The 6th of December saw the launch of the Arrive Alive Festive season road safety campaign. This is a time that we re-think our behaviour on the roads and focus on what is needed to survive a busy time on our roads. We have made available on the Arrive Alive website a list of road safety suggestions. We would however also like to provide a checklist at this important time with regards to car insurance.

Do you have car insurance?

We should start this checklist with the very important question on whether the vehicle owner does in fact have car insurance. Information from the car insurance industry reveals that only approximately 30% of vehicles on our roads are insured! Can you afford not to have car insurance this festive season? The festive season is well-known for heavily congested roads and it would be best to have your vehicle insured. In these tough financial times it is simply reckless to have an uninsured vehicle in such close proximity to other vehicles and drunk drivers!

It is the perfect time to consider finding cheap and affordable car insurance and put your mind at ease this festive season. The little time spent to go online and compare car insurance quotes will be the best present you can by for yourself and your dependents!

Which aspects could nullify my car insurance?

There is no point in having car insurance if our own conduct contravenes the terms and conditions of the policy. We need to avoid on vacation those actions that might result in the rejection of an accident claim. As part of the checklist we would like to advise that the insured vehicle owner avoid the following:

  • Allowing a unlicensed person to drive the insured vehicle.
  • Driving the vehicle whilst intoxicated.
  • Driving a non-roadworthy vehicle -one with worn out tyres.

Are you prepared in the case of an emergency?

Vehicle owners often neglect to be prepared for emergencies when going on vacation – and this also applies to awareness of our car insurance policies. We would like to advise that you consider the following questions:

  • Do I know where to find your car insurance policy in the event of an accident?

We often find that the car insurance policy is hidden away at home or at the office under a pile of paperwork. When on vacation you might like to have at hand more details about your policy should you be involved in an accident.

  • Does the policy have specific stipulations with regards to vehicle recovery?

Take note before going on holiday whether your insurance covers vehicle recovery in the event of an accident. Not only might your car insurance policy have such a stipulation, but also your medical fund or road side assistance products might provide you with vehicle recovery benefits. Make a small note about such benefits and the contact details.

  • Does my policy provide for a replacement vehicle in the event of an accident?

It could be most important when away on holiday to know whether you have access to a vehicle when your vehicle is in for repair. Instead of running around for answers after the accident it would be worth the effort to ascertain the facts before going on holiday!

  • Who do I call if my vehicle has been in a crash?

It is often a mad rush and near nervous breakdown when suddenly having to run around to sort out vehicle repairs in unfamiliar territory. If you are insured with a direct insurer, ascertain beforehand what the procedure is after an accident and which numbers you need to call. If you have a specific car insurance broker – will that person be available or will his /her office close between Christmas and New Years? Ask the broker before going on holiday how he will be reached and whether there is an “emergency plan or number”?

Conclusion
This Car Insurance Blog strives to assist our vehicle owners in gaining awareness not only of important information for their car insurance needs, but also to protect them and their vehicles from harm on the roads. We would like to urge our readers to view on the Arrive Alive road safety website:
