KwaDukuza Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team and Umhlali Task Team members embarked on an operation looking for wanted suspects immediately after the victim was hijacked of his vehicle. Four days later, the members arrested three suspects and recovered two unlicensed firearms in their possession. One of the recovered firearms was taken during the hijacking. All suspects aged between 16 and 26 appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court on 23 April 2014 facing hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The case was remanded until 29 April 2014 for further investigation.
On 19 April 2014 at about 21:50 the victim was at his friend’s place at Shombela Township, KwaDukuza, off-loading goods when he was approached by three armed suspects. It is alleged that the suspects overpowered the victim and took his 9mm pistol. The suspects shot towards the victim but he was not injured. They fled the scene in his Toyota Hilux bakkie. A case of hijacking and attempted murder was opened at KwaDukuza police station for further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the swift arrests of the hijackers by the members. ‘This shows that our officers are dedicated in their duties to make sure that wanted criminals are apprehended and brought before the law’, she said.
