Whilst on routine patrol on Tuesday morning, shortly after 07:00, Marshall Security armed reaction officers were alerted to a hijacking which had just taken place in Devshi Road, in Avoca, north of Durban.
The victim, a father who had has son and daughter in the vehicle at the time, explained that whilst on the way to drop his children off at school, they were stopped by a hatchback vehicle with three male occupants, one of the men alighted from the vehicle and produced a firearm, ordering the father and his children out of the vehicle before making off towards Umhlangane Road.
A description of the vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo and its registration was distributed by the Marshall Security control room to all armed reaction officers and Special Operations Teams in the area and an extensive search began.
The vehicle was spotted heading towards Kwamashu and a high speed chase ensued, with the suspects managing to evade arrest.
Marshall Security members along with the assistance of the South African Police Services combed the area and the vehicle was later found abandoned in ‘K’ section of the township at approximately 07:40.
The vehicle was handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing. The suspects remain at large.
Understandably the children involved in the ordeal were greatly traumatised and a call was made for the assistance of the Durban North Umhlanga Crisis Team.
