I would like clarification on the rule in South Africa regarding the consumtion of alcohol by a passenger in a vehicle and also the transport of alcohol in that vehicle. Could you advise what the Rules of the Road say about this?

At present this is not covered in Road Traffic legislation. Persons may be charged for drinking in public in terms of local by-laws.

Alcohol is allowed to be transported in a vehicle. The law states nothing about alhol consumption by passengers in a vehicle, only the driver. The charge is Driving whilst under the influence of intoxicating liquor with a blood alcohol level not more than 0,05%
