Where should a six(6) months child be seated in a bakkie with two(2) seats and armrest in the middle?
If your bakkie is certified to carry two persons, as it seems it is, then a child seat should be fitted to the passenger seat and restrained with the seat belt.
The sad fact of the matter is that the National Road Traffic Act does not regard a toddler under 3 years of age as a person, therefore there is no law which prevents your wife from occupying the passenger seat, with your child on her lap.
This having been said, the second you are involved in a collision or have to brake hard, your child will not be restrained and will therefore be propelled into the dashboard or windscreen, or for that matter, ejected from the vehicle. Clearly this would not be what you would aim to achieve and therefore I would urge you to consider other options.
I am not sure what type of bakkie you are referring to which would only cater for two persons, however you may be able to investigate the fitting of a bench type seat, wherein you would be able to install child seat between yourself and your wife. This would be a way safer way of transporting your family but if it cannot be done then you may want to consider changing your vehicle.
