Are bikers putting their own lives at risk as well as those of other drivers by driving in the emergency lanes? The Arrive Alive website received this email from a biking enthusiast [David] who made the effort to count bikers in the emergency lane. We though it would be worthwhile sharing these numbers and the message received:
“I spent some time this morning with Vanessa Jackson of ER24 over the N1 highway, Cambridge road bridge, counting bikes and nothing positions on the highway between 6 and 9 this morning. The number will probably be used in a letter to SANRAL requesting no bikes signs be painted in the emergency lanes.
Counted Biker Lane Emergency Lanes
N1S 112…………42……………………..6……………………106
N1N 211…………28……………………150……………………61
Total 323…………70……………………156………………….167
Not really worth publishing, but i think you find the numbers interesting.
You may need some clarification on some aspects, but it’s fairly straightforward. 156 of 323 bikers are IN the emergency lanes.”
