WESTERN CAPE – In pursuit of a safer environment for the people of this province, members of the Flying Squad were doing crime prevention patrols in Cross Roads last night when their attention was drawn to a suspicious VW Up.
Upon pursuing the vehicle, the driver stopped and opened fire at the police. The members retaliated and the suspect was subsequently wounded in his leg, and arrested in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol. His accomplice managed to evade arrest and fled on foot. The vehicle was searched and the registered owner of the VW Up was found in the boot, with his passenger on the back seat. The victims reported to police that they were hijacked by the suspects earlier. The 35-year-old suspect is due to make a court appearance in Athlone once he has been charged.
In an unrelated matter, the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 27-year-old suspect in the possession of an unlicensed firearm in Hek Street Lavender Hill during the early hours of this morning, during a stop and search operation. He is expected to make his court appearance in Wynberg once he has been charged.
