On the Arrive Alive website we have given attention to many driver distractions – including the popular topic of distracted driving through texting and cellular conversations.
Many drivers however neglect the other ordinary distractions such as roadside activity such as construction and pedestrian movement. There are however also significant threats presented by eye –catching billboards and roadside advertising banners etc.
We would like to share a message sent to the Arrive Alive website earlier this week:
“I am absolutely amazed and the amount of advertising that is allowed on our roads. Middle of roads on centre island. Side of roads and now the huge billboards carefully placed on our highways to attract drivers attention. Some even have glittering lights to attract attention !!!!!
Surely this is against all safely regulations. These are to get the drivers attention – to what end – drivers attention taken off the road – more accidents !!!!
In Europe and the United States and only signs one sees on the roads are direction signs and their accident figures speak for themselves.
I know that here this is a multi million rand business but to what cost in the end to the motoring public.”
We would like to urge our road users to be alert and attentive all the time and to avoid being distracted. Distracted driving accidents are avoidable accidents and accident claims from these accidents will reflect on your driving record and increase your car insurance premiums!!
