Question:
I would like to know if you guys can help me? I want to know if you can do your driver license with a bakkie, a nissan bakkie or must it be a car?
Answer:
The non-official term ‘bakkie’ generally refers to a light motor vehicle of 3,500 kg tare weight or less.
The driving licence for such a motor vehicle is a Code B:
Code B:
• Vehicles (except motorcycles) with tare weight of 3 500 kilograms or less; and minibuses, buses and goods vehicles with gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3 500 kg or less. A trailer with GVM of 750 kg or less may be attached.
If the ‘bakkie’ falls into the Code B category as indicated in the bullet point above (i.e. does not exceed the weight mentioned), then it may be used for the driving licence test for the Code B class of vehicle. It need not be a motor car.
