An ex convict was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after he attempted to steal a vehicle from the parking lot of a shopping centre in Verulam – KZN a short while ago (Thursday).
A RUSA Officer who was on patrol when he heard a car alarm go off in the parking lot of a supermarket. Upon investigation he noticed a suspect attempting to lever the door of a Fiat Uno with a claw hammer (picture 3). Upon noticing the RUSA Member the suspect abandoned the theft and fled the parking lot on foot.
A foot chase ensued resulting in the suspect fleeing into a dense bush in an attempt to evade arrest. Back-up Reaction Officers responded, entered the bush and apprehended the suspect. He was found in possession of the handle of the hammer (picture 4) which had broken off.
During an interview the 35 year old Ndwedwe resident explained that he was dropped off by his accomplice who was driving a silver VW Polo. He was a habitual criminal and released from Westville Prison towards the latter part of last year after he served a 6 month sentence for house break-in.
Reaction Officers were forced to release the suspect after the owner of the vehicle refused to register a criminal case against him.
