Fire extinguishers are required if you carry dangerous goods

Question:

Can you please clarify a matter according to the SA Traffic act regarding the fitment of fire extinguishers to LCV vehicles in South Africa. My question really revolves regarding private LCV vehicles. Also, is there a requirement when transporting hazardous goods i.e. additional fuel? While I do in fact carry a fire extinguisher for practical purposes, I need to resolve a difference of opinion in this regard.

Answer:

Fire extinguishers are required if you carry dangerous good. You need to obtain SANS 1518 that provides the details on the fire extinguishers for the different size vehicles.

There are exempt quantities for the various dangerous goods but it differs per substance. SANS 10231 lists the exempt quantities. If you carry less than the exempt quantity you do not need to comply with the dangerous goods provisions.

It is bulky legislation and the products you carry as well as the quantities determine what you need to comply with .
