Today, a shooting between the police and the suspects at Umlazi Mangosuthu High Way took place. It is alleged that the victim (39) was outside her vehicle with her son at Umbilo when she was approached by two unknown suspects who demanded her vehicle. The victim ran away for help and the suspect fled with the vehicle.
The Durban Flying Squad members gave chase until they reach V section on Mangosuthu Highway where they tried to stop the suspects. The suspects opened fire and the police retaliated fatally wounding one suspect (22). Two suspects aged 26 and 28 were arrested for carjacking and attempted murder. A firearm that was used during the hijacking was recovered from the suspects.
The recovered firearm will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if it was used in any commission of crime in the country. No member was injured during the shootout.
Lieutenant General Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the speedy arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the hijacked vehicle as well as the firearm. ”Criminals should be warned that police will not hesitate to retaliate when they come under attack during the execution of their official duties”, she said.
