On 28 November 2016 at about 13:45, Malvern SAPS Crime Prevention Unit apprehended a suspect in possession of a hijacked VW Polo vehicle on Hans Dettman Highway in Malvern. The Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious driver, members checked the registration of the vehicle, however it did not match the vehicle the suspicious male was driving. Members pulled over the vehicle and searched the vehicle. The items in the vehicle belonged to an Indian couple living within the Chatsworth area, one of the items in the vehicle included an address.
Members investigated further by driving to the said address, upon investigation, the couple were not at home, but the neighbour had informed members that a house robbery had occurred at the same residence a week ago, on Monday 21 November 2016. According to the neighbour the house robbers had taken jewellery as well as a motor vehicle from the home. Members verified the information with Chatsworth SAPS, which confirmed that a house robbery has occurred and the vehicle had been carjacked from the premises. The suspect has been detained and will be charged for hijacking and house robbery.
Ethekwini Inner South Cluster Commander Major General Keerath Nunkumar commended members on their swift reaction in apprehending the hijacking suspect. “We will be working efficiently to nab suspects related to theft of vehicles during this season to ensure a crime free Festive Season”, he said.
