How do I check the authenticity of an SA number plate on a motorbike stored abroad?

by jonckie@arrivealive.co.za

Question:

I have just bought an old motorbike that has been in a French barn for 20 years, with an SA plate Thought I would check up on its history if I can as I’d like to register it in France when its restored. Is this possible? How do I do it?

Answer:

Once a vehicle is not licensed annually in SA for longer than 4 years it is deregistered on the system.

The NATIS system – our national registration system has been in place since around 1995. If the vehicle was registered at the time it should be possible trace it with a chassis or engine number.

Technically it would not have been possible to export it without deregistering it in SA but it often happened if the vehicle was exported in a container.

I suggest you contact the RTMC (Road Traffic Management Corporation). The NATIS system is managed by them.
