Question:
I have been living in Botswana for 20 years and converted my SA Drivers’ License (DL) to a Botswana DL.
My SA DL expired, but as I live in Botswana and keep that one current, I never updated my SA DL. Now I intend to move back to SA and would like to reinstate my SA DL.
• can I convert it back, from Botswana to SA?
• if so, what is the procedure?
• Do I have to pay a fine for not renewing my SA DL at the time of expiry?
• If there is a fine, how much would it be (per year)?
Please advise.
Answer:
From our side we can issue the South African drivers licence confirmation letter, stating the validity of the South Africa drivers licence, The RSA drivers licence card can only be renewed, issued or replaced in south Africa personally, you must be in the country for the process to be done, please note that there will be no penalties, arrears or extra charges for the late renewal process to those who are abroad, only licensing fees will be charged. Should you wish to convert the RSA licence to the foreign licence below and attached find the procedure mentioned for your perusal
For the confirmation letter to be issued to you, the following will be needed
- RSA Id copy
- Drivers licence copy
- RSA Passport
Please note that the confirmation letter is free of charge, there is no cost involved but the customer is liable for the collection of the document when it is ready for collection, you can do so by sending somebody or the courier company of your choice to collect the letter on your behalf, and the one who is collecting the document must mention your id number for assistance thereof.
You can scan your document and forward it to CTC@ rtmc.co.za; we will then notify you once the letter is ready for collection
Please note that the expired South African drivers licences are no longer converted in UK and no letters can be issued to those who are in UK having expired drivers licences cards
Due to the increased risk of fraud, letters will not be scanned and emailed.
Kind Regards,
Mr David Motloung
