The SA NRTA defines a sidewalk as –
“sidewalk” means that portion of a verge intended for the exclusive use of pedestrians;
A sidewalk and pavement is the same thing. The term pavement is not used in SA legislation at all. The term sidewalk is used to describe the area where pedestrians may walk. Vehicles may not drive or park on a sidewalk.
A sidewalk (American English) or pavement (British English), also known as a footpath or footway, is a path along the side of a road. A sidewalk may accommodate moderate changes in grade (height) and is normally separated from the vehicular section by a curb.
SA road engineers refer to the actual roadway as the pavement for design and
construction purposes.
