At approximately 10:40 on Tuesday, Marshall Security were alerted to a theft of motor vehicle which had just occurred in Adelaide Tambo (Kensington) Drive, in the suburb of Durban North. A member of the public called the Marshall Security Emergency Contact Centre, stating that he had just witnessed the suspects fleeing with the stolen motor vehicle and was following them on Makeurten Avenue, through the Broadway area, towards Umgeni Park.
The vehicle in question, a grey Volkswagen Polo Vivo had been stolen by suspects and was spotted fleeing down Riverside Road by Marshall Security Armed Reaction Officers, where a high speed chase ensued.
Additional vehicles were deployed to assist and the roadway was closed off in an attempt to stop the stolen vehicle.
In an attempt to evade arrest the suspect swerved off the roadway, smashing through wooden bollards, before coming to a stop on the sidewalk. The suspects accomplices who were following in a Ford Fiesta attempted to run the Marshall Security armed reaction officer over. Despite all efforts, the driver managed to evade attempts to stop the vehicle and fled towards Chris Hani (North Coast) Road. Marshall Security officers gave chase. Unfortunately the vehicle could not be located.
A suspect fled on foot into nearby dense bushes adjacent to the roadway along the Umgeni River bank. A call was made for the assistance of the South African Police Services K9 and Flying Squad units and an extensive search of the area was conducted, however the suspect remains at large.
The vehicle was confirmed to have been stolen from outside a premises in Adelaide Tambo (Kensington) Drive in Durban North.
The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
