An unknown woman is missing following a hijacking that occurred at the Canelands intersection in Verulam a short while ago.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to Old Main Road near the Canelands Library after members of the public found a semi-conscious man lying on the roadside bleeding from an injury to his head.

Upon arrival the victim explained while stationary at the intersection he offered a lift to a female who was standing on the roadside. Shortly after she got into his Toyota Corolla the drivers’ side window was smashed in and the driver was assaulted by two suspects. One suspect was allegedly armed with a firearm.

The male victim was then forced into the boot of his vehicle and driven to an isolated spot in a sugar cane plantation in the vicinity of the Canelands Library. The suspects then forced him out of the boot and robbed him of his valuables before fleeing. The injured man walked to an informal settlement where he was assisted by residents.

Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search of the cane fields and recovered the Toyota Corolla abandoned. A woman’s sandal was found in the vehicle while a second matching blood stained sandal was found a few metres away from the vehicle (picture 3). A blood-soaked bandage was found on the passenger seat.

The driver was transported to the hospital for medical attention. The woman’s identity is unknown at this stage and it cannot be confirmed if she was an accessory to the hijacking.

Police are investigating further.
