Question:
What is the speed tolerance allowed for in South Africa with regards to fines being issued for speeding. Some sources say 10% and some 10km/h? Also why is this tolerance allowed if so?
Answer:
The tolerance is 10 km/h for normal speed prosecutions. Average speed prosecutions do not have a tolerance.
The tolerance is in place to accommodate small calibration errors in vehicles speedometers and to avoid prosecuting persons for exceeding the speed limit by only 2 or 3 km/h.
