Insights gained from the last quarter of 2022 SAPS records have given us a better understanding of the current criminal landscape in South Africa. During the last quarter of 2022, SAPS records revealed that hijackings had increased throughout South Africa, while vehicle thefts had slightly decreased over the same period. It helps us to understand criminal activity and their techniques to lower risks. So, read on and find out more.1
Criminals outsmart technologies
Thieves are becoming smarter daily, using refined computer programs to breach emergency start and keyless entry technologies. This places luxury SUVs firmly within their reach. 1
An increase in vehicle thefts
Some companies noticed a significant increase in thefts of luxury cars, with Toyota as the leading brand. The most significant increases occurred in Boksburg North, followed by Honeydew in Johannesburg. 1
Insurers may have to intervene
Insurance companies may require owners in specific areas to install anti-theft devices in car makes that criminals target the most. This is to mitigate vehicle losses which can significantly affect insurers financially. 1
Syndicates focus on luxury vehicles
In 2021, syndicates targeted high-end vehicles like the Ford Ranger, with Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner leading the way. Criminals particularly eyed the Toyota GD6 range. 1
Stolen vehicles ‘exported’
Criminals quickly take stolen vehicles across the border before anyone can locate them. In addition, thieves take advantage of the lowered protection of cars at schools, shopping malls and religious gatherings. 1
Do you have car insurance?
Should you have no cover, it’s best to get it, especially if you are the owner of a luxury vehicle. 1
Taking the following steps will lower the risk of someone stealing your car.
Inform the car insurer
Always inform your car insurance company of any extra security features that you add to your car so that you have adequate cover, should someone steal it. 1
Have you installed a tracking system?
Such a system with much-improved technology will provide additional protection against car theft. 1
Stay alert
When driving, be alert at all times, especially when approaching intersections and traffic lights. Intersections and traffic lights are areas that require a driver’s full attention. Other road users may not follow traffic signals or signs, so stay vigilant and be ready to react in case of an unexpected situation. When driving at night, it’s especially important to slow down and keep a safe following distance from other cars. Be prepared for any sudden movements, turns or stopping cars. Your moving car stands less chance of being hijacked. Once the vehicle is stationary, criminals can make their move. 1
Is your car really locked?
When you click the remote key to lock your car, make sure it is locked, as criminals can block signals using remote jamming technology. 1
If you have lost your car
Despite the trauma you are experiencing, always cooperate with the authorities, as they know what to do.1
Lives are precious
Be prepared to rather say goodbye to your beautiful Toyota Fortuner than lose the life of a loved one. You can always replace the stolen car, but you can’t replace your family. 1
