What you need to know about caravan insurance

by jonckie@arrivealive.co.za

Many of us know what’s what when it comes to car insurance and most of us understand the deal with home insurance. But what about caravan insurance? Do you know how it works? If you need it? What it covers? If it’s an all-inclusive product or if you need to add anything on to make sure you’ve got everything insured?

We’ll bet that while you might have thought, ‘Well, what’s to know?’, those questions will have you scratching your head and mumbling to yourself. Fear not, for we’ve got the low down on everything you need to know about caravan insurance.

Starting with… Why you need it in the first place

A caravan is worth its weight in gold for holidays. It’s a true asset and if anything were to happen to it and you lost your mobile home, you’d be devastated. Apart from the feelings of loss and grief, there’s the enormous cost of repairing or replacing your trusty caravan which has probably saved you thousands in accommodation fees during the holiday seasons over the years. It might not seem likely that your caravan (or the stuff that’s in it) would need to be repaired or replaced, but actually accidents do happen and there are vandals, thieves, and South Africa’s infamous troupe of rowdy monkeys (that can be found in every campsite across the land) to consider.

That’s why you need affordable cover that’s comprehensive and will pay for the cost of repairing or replacing your caravan if it’s been stolen, hi-jacked, vandalised, or damaged in an accident.

How it works and what it does

Getting caravan insurance is more or less the same as investing in car or home insurance. You just need to go online or pick up the phone and get at least 3 quotes from the top insurance companies in the country. To help you out a bit, we can tell you that when you’re getting your quotes, you should compare the cost, the excess, what’s covered, and what you need to add on as an extra.

If you take note of these points, you should safely be able to choose the best policy for you and your budget. Then you can drive away for your time off and park it back home when you return, knowing that your insurer will step in if you have to put in a claim.

For instance, if you chose caravan insurance from this insurer, you’d pay an affordable price to cover the loss of, or damage to, your own caravan, as well as for any accidental legal liability that you may have caused to any other parties. And those bills can reach the sky, believe us.

Get up to speed on the extras

Not all caravan insurance policies include cover for all the goodies that you’ve filled it with in order to make life more comfy. In fact, there are very few insurers who offer cover for a caravan’s contents as part of the general policy. It’s super important to know this so that you can cover things like the linens, kitchen gear, and little touches that you’ve specially put inside to make your holiday as easy and relaxing as possible. You don’t want to have paid your premiums only to find out when you claim for a break-in that nothing that’s been stolen is covered.

When you add this extra onto your policy, you’ll have to choose a total amount for which to insure your caravan’s contents. The easiest way to do this is to grab a pen and paper, imagine turning your caravan upside down, and note down all the items that would fall out. So, for example, the built-in cupboards wouldn’t fall out. But the DVD player, clothes, food, and bedding would. That’s the stuff you need to jot down and then assign prices to. The total amount is what you should insure your caravan’s contents for.

Yes, you’ll pay a little more, but you’ll get a lot more cover as a result.

When all’s said and done, when it comes to finding affordable insurance , what you really want is a reliable service provider. Once you’ve found ‘the 1’ and signed the policy, you can rest assured that you (and your valuables) are in good hands.
