Question:
I am a lecturer at UJ and I have to take students every year on a trip to St Lucia. The car rental agency insists that I need a public drivers license. Is this required and how do I go about applying for one?
Answer:
If the vehicle is designed to carry 12 or more passengers including the driver or the GVM exceeds 3 500kg, a PrDP is required.
You can apply at your local driving licence testing centre (DLTC). You must be over the age of 21 for category P (passengers) PrDP.
Upon application you will be received a form MC (medical certificate) that has to be completed by a registered medical practitioner. You will have to obtain a SAPS clearance.
If the DLTC is equipped with a Live Capture Unit (LCU) the police clearance is obtained electronically. You can contact Mr Msiza at the Gaiteng Provincial Department to verify whether your local DLTC is equipped with a LCU and for any questions..
