Will the driver of your car for the holiday be insured?

by jonckie@arrivealive.co.za

holiday_driverMany of us are making plans for travel during the festive season. On the Arrive Alive website we will be sharing festive season safety tips on both vehicle and driver fitness. It is however also important to advise vehicle owners on the Car Insurance Blog in an effort to avoid nasty surprises when it comes to their insurance.

Even though we can do our utmost to prevent vehicle crashes – accidents do happen and we need to be insured against these risks. The cautious vehicle owner will be alert to those dangers that might result in the dismissal of his car insurance claim by his insurer.

Do you know WHO is insured in your car insurance policy?

The importance of this question has been highlighted through the results of a survey conducted by SGIC in Australia. The survey revealed that almost 70% drivers aren’t sure if they’re covered for someone else to share the driving!

We have emphasized on the Arrive Alive website that drivers avoid driver fatigue by taking regular rest breaks. It has been found that up to one in three accidents are caused by driver fatigue.

Good advice is to take a breather every 2 hours or 200km’s. Better advice is to also share drivers and not to have one driver drive the whole distance….This however should only be done if such a driver is indeed licensed!!

We would like to advise vehicle owners to check if those drivers who might be driving the holiday car are indeed licensed. We often find that vehicle owners just want to relax when they reach their destination and they allow young drivers to travel to the beach or the supermarket to make the daily purchases.

Car Insurance policies only provides cover where the vehicle is operated within the Rules of the Road and by a licensed operator. Claims will be rejected where:

-The driver is not a licensed driver

-The driver at the time of the accident is found to be intoxicated

-The vehicle at the time of the accident is found to be non- roadworthy

Do not slack on your safety alertness during the holiday – Do not risk having your insurance claim rejected!!
