Whilst buying a new car is an expensive venture, what a pleasure to learn more about the five most affordable cars on sale in South Africa. Car prices shown are as of October 2022.1
1. Suzuki S-Presso (starting at R156,900)
Suzuki launched the new S-Presso in 2020. If you are looking for a nippy hatchback and you are a first-time buyer, you qualify. The S-Presso has a 1.0-litre petrol engine which generates 50 kW power and 90 Nm torque and is married to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual transmission. The entry model, the 1.0 GL, has an average fuel consumption of 4.9 litres/100 km.1
2. Mahindra KUV100 Nxt 1.2 G80 K2+ (starting at R172,999)
The entry-level car proves itself well against its competitors. Equipped with a 1.2-litre, 3- cylinder, petrol engine, it generates 61 kW of power and 115 Nm of torque via a 5-speed manual gearbox. Its average fuel consumption is 5.9 litres/100 km. For your safety, the Mahindra has 2 airbags, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) .1
3. The Renault Kwid (starting at R177,999)
The Renault Kwid is much sought after in South Africa and is Renault’s best-selling model. The Kwid’s 1-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine has a power output of 50 kW and 91 Nm of torque via a manual transmission.1
Besides the entry-level model, the Kwid 1.0 Life, the Kwid Zen is next, costing R187, 999, while the Kwid Climber, at the top of the range, is priced at R198,000. Apart from their manual transmission, the Zen and Climber also come with an automated manual transmission (AMT). The Kwid 1.0 Life consumes 4.9 litres/100 km, while its safety features include 2 airbags and ABS brakes.1
4. Suzuki Celerio (starting at R174,900)
The Celerio’s 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine generates 49 kW of power and 89 Nm of torque via a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The entry-level model is the Celerio 1.0 GA, with a fuel consumption of 4.4 litres/100 km. The next level model is the Celerio 1.9 GL at R194, 900, while the automatic option costs R209, 900.1
5. The Suzuki Swift (starting at R189,900)
The Suzuki Swift has shown its true colours by being one of South Africa’s best-selling cars, reaching second place in car sales for the first 6 months of 2022. It has an attractive, competitive price in the budget car segment. The Swift has a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 61 kW power and 113 Nm torque. The entry-level model consumes petrol at 4.9 litres/100 km.1
