Shortly after 11:00 on Sunday, Marshall Security were alerted via a neighbourhood whatsapp group, to an attempted house robbery, which had occurred in the Effingham area. Armed reaction officers were immediately dispatched and on further investigation it was ascertained that four armed men arrived at the home in a silver Volkswagen vehicle and attempted to gain access to the property as the elderly home owners were arriving home.
A scuffle broke out resulting in the home owner being assaulted with the butt of a firearm, before the suspects fled the scene towards the Corobrick Road area.
The homeowner, a male believed to be in his late sixties, sustained moderate injuries and was attended to on scene by the Marshall Security Medical Support Unit and later refused hospital transportation.
In the heist of their getaway attempt, the vehicle the suspects were using suffered a blow out and came to a halt on Umhlangane Road near the intersection of Cororbrick Road. The armed men then proceeded to hijack a passing motorist, stealing a Honda CRV, making off in an unknown direction.
The vehicle was fitted with a tracking device and monitored by Tracker. A signal was found in the Ntuzuma area and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team were called in to assist. After a brief tracking period, the vehicle was found abandoned by Marshall Security and Tracker, on a dirt road in the Ntuzuma area, north of Durban.
The suspects remain at large.
The vehicle and robbery scene were both handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
