Is there a legislative prerequisite for buses that transport school children to have seat belts in place?

Question:

Please can you advise if there is any legislation within SA that defines that it is a legislative prerequisite for buses that transport school children to have seat belts in place. Does it include buses that may be owned by the individual schools and/or as may be hired from coach/bus hire  service providers?

Answer:

The legislation only requires seat belts for mini and midi-buses registered after Sept 2006. The seats must be designed according to specific standards but the older vehicles and buses with 35 seats and more are not required to have seat belts.
