What can we do to improve driver attitude?

by [email protected]

We would like to share a few thoughts emailed to the Arrive Alive website by a concerned road user who resides in Pretoria:

To the Honourable Minister of Transport, Dear Sir

Hope that you are doing well!

My name is ms Marie Conradie. I follow the news bulletins regularly. In connection with the death toll on the roads during holidays, the problem of road disasters and my experience as a road user in Pretoria, I wish to share a few proposals. Will, you kindly give attention to that, perhaps it can be of help in your planning for the financial year and for forcing motorists to respect road regulations.

Wishing you all the best Yours truly, Ms M Conradie

ROAD ACCIDENTS – THE CONSEQUENCE OF ROAD BEHAVIOUR AT HOME

All efforts to warn road users during holidays by means of radio and TV broadcasts to stick to traffic rules, keeping the speed limits and not-drink-and-drive, are of little avail … if they do not keep it up in their local city, town or district throughout the year.

What is the SOLUTION?

1. The Department of Transport and relevant local authorities will budget to increase the number of traffic officers on duty

2. And especially, that all potentially dangerous routes/crossings will be manned on a regular basis, increasing the visibility of traffic officials.

3. To begin with, law enforcement campaigns for a fixed period of time like 6 months, one year or longer, must be implemented on strategic points during peak traffic to enforce the rules of the road:

    • Keeping to speed limits;
    • Slowing down at traffic signs (yellow) and stop when the robot is red, instead of speeding;
    • No cell phones (or anything else) held in one hand while driving;
    • No zig-zagging in traffic, or ignoring white/red lines

4. Drivers must be DISCIPLINED:

    • Not to stop at prohibited spots;
    • Not to make U-turns at random;
    • Not to ignore traffic directions by signposts or road markings.
    • Trespassers must be heavily fined
