My question is: can he not use the existing learners to aquire his license for a light motor vehicle and then later do his license for the extra heavy vehicle with the same learner license or will the learners be cancelled when he he acuires the license for light motor vehicle. The learners is valid for 2 years and it seems a waste to go through the process again to do a learners again if he pass the test for light motor vehicle.”
Answer:
The Code 3 learner’s licence does authorise the holder thereof to operate any motor vehicle excluding a motor cycle.
Code 2 is any motor vehicle with a GVM under 3 500kg
The code 1 authorises the holder thereof to operate any motor cycle, however in the case where the holder is not 17 the engine capacity is limited to 125cc.
In this case if the holder wishes to obtain a code B licence and does so, the DLTC must return the learner’s licence if it is still valid as it authorises the operation of a heavy vehicle.
Also note that the learner driver must be accompanied by a licensed driver for code 2 and 3 and for code 3 if the vehicle requires the driver to hold a PrDP the licensed driver must also hold a PrDP for that class of vehicle. The learner driver with a code 1 may not convey any passengers.
