KwaZulu-Natal: In the early hours of Wednesday, 21 February 2018, Durban K9 unit members were conducting their crime prevention duties in and around Phoenix area when they followed up information about alleged hijackers in the area. The first wanted suspect was traced and arrested for carjacking that was reported at Inanda area. Through investigation five more suspects were arrested and linked to otherhijacking at Phoenix area that was reported this month. A total of six suspects aged between 20 and 35 years were charged for armed robbery. They will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon.
On 3 February 2018 at 21.30, the victim was seated in his blue Renault Sandero vehicle at Tiffmore road, Phoenix when he was approached by the suspects who were driving their white Opel vehicle. At gunpoint he was forced out of his vehicle and the suspects allegedly drove away in his vehicle. A case of hijacking was opened at Phoenix police station. The arrested suspects were linked to the case.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the arrest by the members. “Our police team will work around the clock to check if the arrested suspects are not linked to other violent trio crimes in the province such as hijackings and house robberies, he said.
