On Tuesday 10 December at about 14:20, members followed up information from a tracking company which led them to Voortrekker Road, Brakpan.
Benoni Flying Squad member, Sergeant Jaco Powell was on the lookout for a ‘silver’ Ford Focus which was hijacked in Leslie, Mpumalanga last week. The vehicle had eluded SAPS and the tracking company on Sunday already in Tsakane and was now moving around Brakpan. With Sgt Powell in Brakpan, information started coming through that the vehicle was headed to Benoni on the Apex Road. Constant updates were given with Sgt Powell following suit as the Focus got on the N12 highway towards Johannesburg. Constables Thabiso Mabaso and Denovin Norman, Sgt Powell’s colleagues also joined in pursuit coming from the R24 highway.
As the Focus entered Johannesburg and passed Jeppe SAPS members were still on the lookout for a ‘silver’ vehicle. At around 15:20, Sgt Powell arrived in Commissioner Street when he noticed a gold Ford Focus with two (02) suspects driving in the bus lane. Police instinct and experience initiated him to pull the vehicle over after they tried to elude him by attempting to turn off. With backup arriving from his two (02) colleagues as well as Johannesburg Flying Squad, K-9 Benoni and tracking company the vehicle was discovered to have false registration plates.
A test of the VIN number revealed it was the hijacked vehicle being sought from Leslie. The suspects were swiftly arrested and the vehicle impounded.
Investigations continue in all cases.
The suspects aged 39 and 49 years will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court soon facing charges of possession of hijacked motor vehicle.
