Question:
My 75 year old neighbour has been told by an ophthalmic surgeon and a neurosurgeon that she cannot drive anymore because her peripheral vision is impaired. She has started driving again and we have several schools, nursery schools and old age homes in our vicinity. I am particularly concerned about the high school which she has to drive past to get to the shops. What, if anything can I do because she insists that she is fine to drive.
Answer:
You can request that she be retested by the authorities. Unfortunately, they do not have the power to cancel a licence without a retest.
I suggest you contact the dept of transport in your province and request them to designate your local testing centre for the test.
An easier route may be section 15 of the legislation. Section 15 of the National Road Traffic Act also disqualifies persons from holding a licence if they suffer from certain medical conditions. A doctor can certify that she suffers from one of the illnesses which would disqualify her from holding a licence.
