Answer:
A bus or mini-bus a mini-bus or a midi-bus operating in terms of an operating licence*, outside an urban area, unless a speed limit sign indicates a lower speed:
Maximum speed limit on a non-urban road, including a freeway: 100 km/h
Regulation 293 also states that such a vehicle must display a sign on the rear of the vehicle, denoting that the vehicle is subject to a speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour.
* There are two interpretations for the clause ‘operating in terms of an operating licence’:
- If the vehicle is thus licenced, even if it is not carrying passengers; and
- If the vehicle is operating in terms of such licence – i.e. it is carrying passengers permitted by such licence.
The intention is to control vehicles operating in terms of an operating licence.
If the vehicle is not used as such chances are it will still be prosecuted if it is done with a camera, as the system picks them all up as 100 km/h maximum.
You may need to make representations if you do get caught with a camera and the vehicle was for private use.
