Getting lost can be very stressful, causing us to overreact and panic in that situation, especially when our safety is under threat by potential opportunists.
Typically, when people get lost, they would pull off somewhere on the side of the road if it’s safe, and then open up either Google Maps or Waze on a cell phone to get real time directions. A common option when we’re in a panic is to phone someone who could potentially help.
In this day and age, we have become so dependent on technology, but what if your phone battery is about to die and you left your charging cable at home; or worse, you don’t have a GPS device?
In this article, we will look at some helpful advice on what you can do if you happen to find yourself in this type of predicament.
Safety Tips for when You get Lost while Driving1
- Look for landmarks: look for landmarks or signs which may help you to tell if you are heading in the right direction or if you are going around in circles. Know your north from your south. Make sure to follow the road signs that lead you toward the place you actually want to go.
- Drive slowly: try and stay in the slow lane. Drive slowly and cautiously, giving yourself enough time to read the road signs. Only switch lanes if you absolutely have to. You will be less likely miss the correct exit or road that you need to turn into.
- Make good decisions: don’t be erratic while driving. You may be switching lanes often, because you are not sure where you are going and what road to take. When you pick a road and it’s the right one, that is great. But if you chose the wrong one, don’t panic, but just carry on driving until you find the right way.
- Don’t make it obvious: Don’t make it obvious that you are lost. This might draw unwanted attention from unsavoury characters who may seek an opportunity to take advantage of your situation.
- Pull over: try and pull over at a safe place. Take a breather and try to backtrack your steps and get your bearings, then continue finding your way out.
- Ask for help: look for a petrol station and ask one of the petrol attendants for help. In most cases, they are willing and able to point you in the right direction. Put your pride aside in this instance – you may need all the help you can get.
- Keep calm: most importantly, just keep level headed and calm when you are lost. Do not panic. Just take a deep breath and calm down before continuing your journey. Panicking will lower your concentration levels while driving and could potentially cause an accident.
Before going out on an adventure or road trip where you are unfamiliar with the area or surroundings, try and plan ahead. Know your route and do research on the area and look for landmarks that can help you navigate, hopefully in the right direction. Remembering these tips will get you to your destination safely.
