From Northdale to CBD: One Suspect, Two Stolen Vehicles

by [email protected]

Just after 9am yesterday morning, Mi7 Control Room received a call for urgent assistance after a vehicle was stolen in Northdale. It is believed the vehicle – a Toyota Corolla – was parked outside the owner’s home when it was taken.

Our Surveillance and Tactical Response Unit (STRU) was immediately dispatched. They partnered up with members of the vehicle’s tracking company to carry out the search. The vehicle was eventually traced to the Manor area, where it was found abandoned outside a block of flats.

While on scene, tracking company members received information of a second vehicle – a VW T-Cross – stolen nearby in the Pietermaritzburg CBD. It is believed a woman was sitting in the vehicle, waiting for her husband who was in a shop, when a man forced his way into the car – holding her at knifepoint.

The suspect allegedly took control of the vehicle and sped off, the woman still inside. She bravely managed to jump from the moving vehicle and reported the incident. Tracking signals indicated it was headed towards Northdale.

STRU members quickly redeployed, following the coordinates to Balhambra Way, where the vehicle was intercepted in a driveway.

To their amazement, the suspect inside matched the description of the same individual involved in the Corolla hijacking. On questioning, he was linked to both crimes.

Both vehicles were successfully recovered, and the suspect was handed over to SAPS for further investigation.

We commend the collaborative effort and teamwork displayed today.
